The Porsche team drove their cars on the public highway to Sandown Park, Australia.

“To get the WEC cars to the circuit they simply drove them down Princes Highway to the circuit. The Police arrived about 30 minutes later wondering what on earth had happened (laughs), the cars just started up and drove out of workshops and off to the track. It was very spectacular.”

-Alan Hamilton

They went on to win the event (of course).

Although they weren’t technically street legal, didn’t that class of car back in the day still have full turn signals, etc?

If I remember correctly, the 911Rs that broke all those endurance speed records in Monza in 1967 were driven all the way from Stuttgart to there. They were in a hurry to go there because a Swiss team had tried to break some records with 906s but had run into mechanical problems; FIA’s rules would still allow them another try with different cars, but they had to be in Monza in 48 hours.

And there was one year of the Paris-Dakar (1984) when the transporters of the Porsche team got stuck at the border due to a truckies’ strike, so they offloaded the three cars from the transporters and went on by road to Paris. I think it was with the 953s (911 4x4). One of them won (Metge).

Don’t know about 962s, but 956s certainly had turn signals at the front (between each pair of front headlights). Also side repeaters.

They still do now. You occasionally see cars on track with the signals going because the driver bumped the switch (Mostly LMP2s where the drivers are less familiar with the cars)

Addendum to the Paris-Dakar anecdote... crossing France by motorway /route national was a no-no because of the strike so they used little back roads, in some cases little mountain roads.

Now imagine encountering three Rothmans-liveried, high-lift, 4WD 911 barreling down the twisties in some god-forsaken secondary road. In the middle of the winter (the rally start was on Jan 1.)

Talk about the Porsche mystique!

Unfortunately I just cannot imagine Porsche or their cars pulling off anything like that nowadays.

Pulling it off? No, probably not. But given their dedication and outside-the-box thinking, I wouldn’t put it past them for trying if the need ever arose.

If they did this today, they’d get stopped for illegal mods...
